Wading Around for a Broker

Need to check out your financial advisor? There are a number of online tools that allow you to look up your broker, advisor, or financial planner and find out information about their background.

This information includes work experience, licensing, professional qualifications or certifications, customer complaints, regulatory or disciplinary actions, etc. Take a look at BrokerCheck by FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority); the Investment Adviser Public Disclosure website, sponsored by the SEC; or the CFP (Certified Financial Planner) Board’s website to verify a CFP’s certification and background.

Check out these figures by the Federal Reserve’s Check out these figures by the Federal Reserve’s “Distribution of Household Wealth in the U.S. since 1989” (updated 12/18/2020).  The data provide quarterly figures for 12 categories from 1989-2020.  (Note: Distributions by generation are defined by birth year as follows: Silent and Earlier=born before 1946, Baby Boomer=born 1946-1964, Gen X=born 1965-1980, and Millennial=born 1981-1996.) Even though millennials are the largest generation (as of 2019), the millennial wealth data trail the other 3 gens (see wealth by generation).
